FPC® Fuel Catalyst Tests In Motorships

The benefits of the FPC® Fuel Catalyst have been demonstrated in actual use by motorship operators in Australian and Southeast Asia. These studies have been done in cooperation with Fuel Technology Pty Ltd, the Australia based subsidiary of RDI, Inc. Test results are summarized below.

Ro-Ro Cargo:

12,000 D.W.T. Main Engines 2 x B&W Alpha, 3200 BHP at 750 RPM
Fuel Efficiency Gain of 5% with catalyst fuel treatment

Container Ship: 18,641 D.W.T. Main Engine 1 x Pielstick 8 PC4-21, 13200 BHP
Fuel Efficiency Gain of 5% with catalyst fuel treatment
Motor Collier: Main Engines 2 x Daihatsu 6DS26
Fuel Efficiency Gain of 4% to 5% with catalyst fuel treatment
General Cargo: 2,000 D.W.T. Main Engine Industrie 6D80D, 1200 BHP
Fuel Efficiency Gain of 7% with catalyst treated fuel
General Cargo: 1,500 D.W.T. Main Engines 2 x MAN, 800 BHP
Fuel Efficiency Gain of 6% with catalyst treated fuel
Fishing Supply: 300 D.W.T. Main Engines 2 x 3408 Caterpillar
Fuel Efficiency Gain of 6% with catalyst treated fuel

Fuel efficiency gain was determined from statistical analysis of ship records. Although not as accurate as controlled test methods, these studies provide support to the laboratory and controlled field tests with large bore, heavy-duty diesels.

The fuel efficiency gains observed in the above tests are similar to those obtained in steady-state controlled tests with large bore diesels operated at best power and specific fuel consumption settings (5% to 7%). These tests have been conducted with two and four-cycle engines in the 500 to 3,600 horsepower range, and include EMD, GE, Alco, English Electric, Detroit Diesel, Caterpillar and Cummins engine models. Engine applications have included locomotive, mining, and stationary diesel power generation.

Presently, FPC® Fuel Catalyst is used to improve the performance of diesel fuels in over 2,000 heavy-duty diesel engines in the USA, Canada and Australia.
